Your Spiritual Foundation: Why a Strong-Looking Life Can Collapse in the Storm (The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders – Matthew 7:24-27)

A few years ago, we had a strong winter storm move through our area. It came with drenching rain and more powerful than usual winds.

The next day as I was looking at the damage—such as the fences that had blown down, the tree limbs on the ground, and scattered debris—I walked to the front of our church only to discover that our church sign was lying on the side.

This is not a small sign. It was about 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide. It had been there for about 25 years—it had the appearance of being a solid structure. In fact, I thought that the builder may have used cinder blocks for its foundation.

But once it blew over, I discovered that it was actually hollow on the inside! It was just thin plywood covered in stucco. The only thing securing it to the ground were two four by fours that had been rotted through a long time ago. Truthfully, it would not have taken much to blow that sign over because it had such a poor foundation.

You might know the story found in Matthew’s gospel about having the Word of God as our foundation as Christians. Here Jesus says,

“Therefore anyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house—and it fell with a great crash.”

Since you're reading this, let me ask you, “How is your foundation? Is it built on the solid rock of Jesus Christ?”

You can look as strong as you like on the outside, but if you have no real foundation, how will you stand in the storms that will come to you in your life?
The church sign we had that blew down was just a sign, which can be replaced. However, your spiritual foundation must be secure in Christ and there's no replacement for that.

Moreover, Jesus is going to come some glorious day for his own. For those who have a foundation of sand, it'll be a dreadful day. But those who have built their spiritual house on the Rock, it'll be our day of glory, because you will see Jesus face to face as you stand on the rock!
